In honor of AEG Week, I have decided to review a product of theirs. This is it.
It should come as no surprise to anyone who has read some of my reviews that I like stripped-down rules sets and quick start editions. I like publishers who approach their customers with an opportunity to play for free, while teaching them the rules sets. Thus, what I look for I'm a quick start edition of a game is something that allows me to learn (or brush up on) the basics, and gives me a leaping-off point for further forays into the system in question.
In one respect, this review is a departure from my usual fare of rules sets, as Legacy of Disaster is listed in the DB as a module, however, it also includes a set of quick start rules, and as such is very much in keeping with what I have been doing. Legacy of Disaster was published for Free RPG day 2010, and is, as I have stated in my preamble, both a module and a set of quick start rules. Weighing in at 32 pages, it is a beautiful piece of work, with concise and well-written rules and guidelines.
After quickly outlining the setting, the booklet jumps straight in and explains the rules, starting with the Roll and Keep system, and the target number system, before explaining Void Points, which, as far as I can see, works somewhat like the story point system in Fate. In addition, there is a system of raises, wherein you can raise the target number and accomplish more advanced maneuvers.
The next section is the combat rules, which starts with defining important terms, before clearly and succinctly explaining the combat rules, as well as wounds, lethality, stances, actions and maneuvers. That's it for the rules section, which takes up all of 6 pages, leaving 26 untouched. The next part is the adventure module itself, which weighs in at eight pages, before spending the remaining pages on pre-generated characters and spells.
Before reading this module, the only AEG product I had had any experience with whatsoever was the Legend of the Five Rings CCG, which never really caught my fancy. This most certainly did. It is well written, extremely well laid out, and the artwork is just amazing.
This is pretty much as close as you can get to a perfect quick start version of rules; clear, succinct rules with great layout, pregenerated characters and a module designed to show you how the society in which you roleplay works.
On the quality of this product, I am confident that, for me, picking up a copy of the core book will be a worthwhile investment.

Maybe you can change the item category to Quick Start / Fast Play Rules, or add it?
