Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
OK, character creation. I'll skip the specifics, assuming folks have at least picked up and looked at the Startup Edition, and know the basics (four stats, one talent). Definitely give some thought to the talent. It can apply as an extra die in any skill check, provided you can convince me that it's application makes sense in the story.
The full text suggests coming up with a name, a basic personality, and a former occupation prior to setting up your stats, just to provide some guidance. And remember, there should be some reason why an InSpectres franchise would want to hire you.
Let's see what we've got.

Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
Urbano Giraldi
Academics: 3 Athletics: 1 Technology: 2 Contact: 1 of 3
Talent: Stage Magic
Urbano was briefly famous after appearing on a TV talent show as "The Great Giraldi". His bookings dropped off after the talent show ended, and now Urbano needs a day job in order to keep paying his rent. Hoping that he can pass off his sleight of hand as a genuine knowledge of the supernatural, Urbano heads off to the local InSpectres franchise to apply for work.

Ooops, I seem to be slacking here. I'll try to get it in later today.
Aight, here we go.
Prosper Rawle has worked many jobs: construction worker, cook, taxi driver, teacher, bouncer, and lately, Animal Control Officer. This is just another job, though maybe a little weirder. It can't be worse than wrangling stray dogs. At least her hopes.
Academics 2 Athletics 3 Technology 2 Contact 2

Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
I came up with a couple of character ideas. Given that I might not be around for several jobs, it might be better to let the primary three players come up with their concepts so there isn't a "gap" in the party skills after the first job.
In the interim, here's one character idea I had, to see if people like her:
Nandini Ramaswami (say: NONE-thin-ee RAHM-uh-SWAH-mee)
Academics: 3 Athletics: 2 1 Technology: 4 Contact: 1
Teen computer whiz. What she lacks in street smarts, she makes up for in hacking. Nandini grew up in Seattle, and began coding for Microsoft on a freelance basis while in high school. She is obsessed with old sci fi and horror movies, particularly of the campy variety. She can come off as a know-it-all or a bit haughty and doesn't relate that well with people she doesn't know.
Now, on summer break before college at UC Berkeley, she wonders whether her plan of pursuing medical school (or indeed, her backup plan of a career with a computer science company) will ever be as exciting as the films of her passion. Seeing a flyer for InSpectres recruitment, she wonders whether it might be a better fit. At any rate, she'll try out for a summer job -- maybe they have an internship?
Talent: Tennis -- Like so many other South Indian kids, she went to tennis camps aplenty, though carpal tunnel (combining tennis and programming is a BAD idea!) has kept her from progressing further in the U.S.T.A. rankings of late. (I anticipate this coming in handy in melee-style combat, mostly, with dodge and WHACK rolls?).

Nice concept! I like that your stats are fairly equally distributed, to reflect your Jack-of-All-Trades background. I'm wondering about your talent. Could you see yourself being able to apply it to, say, an Academics roll, or a Contact roll? Again, it can add an extra die if it applies to the situation. And I'm guessing that that stamina comes from perhaps working some of those jobs in parallel? Teacher by day, taxi driver by night, for example?

Very cool. And a great way to hedge your bets as far as one-shot vs. longer term.

From an InSpectres standpoint, a truly useful Talent is one applicable to all four skill rolls at some point or other. Combat is generally an Athletics roll, and yes, Tennis could easily apply there. It's nice to turn that "2" into a "3". How could you apply it to Academics? Technology? Contact?

Yes! That's the idea. 12 hour work days, grading endless papers, driving endless circles around the city, standing for hours on end in front of the club or in a hot kitchen. I couldn't think of a better name for it.

OK. I'm still not sure if there's a possible situation where it might apply to, say, Academics, but we can run with it.

Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
There's a lot of opportunity for player narration, so we should be able to work the talents in somehow. And if we can't, it's a comedy game and epic failure is funny.

Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
Sounds like I'm the weird agent then... OK, I can roll with that...
Flora the Plant Woman
When the sun shone on a mystic artefact that had sunk into the bog into which the poorly-named botanist's body was thrown, something really strange happened. Flora returned to life, but where previously she had been soft and fleshy, she now had serious wood.
Flora the Plant Woman has managed to make her way in society as long as no-one looks too closely at her; her 'face' is in fact a delicate arrangement of petals. She can control and manipulate plant life, but she's terribly afraid of fire suddenly. She can control her shape and grow vines and such when she wants, but she still hasn't managed to find a manicurist who will work with a plane instead of a nailfile. In short, the InSpectres agency is a good place for her, because the rest of the world isn't working out terribly well.
Academics: 3 (I used to be a scientist!) Athletics: 3 (I'm a might Oak! Really!) Technology: 1 (I was never that good with fiddly stuff) Contact: 1 (Are they looking at me? Oh god, they're looking at me) Cool: 2 (I'm taking this whole thing in stride pretty well. It's better than being dead, for sure!)
What do we think?

Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
Looks good. Weird agents aren't in the free Startup guide; you want to give Krishna and Mario a brief rundown on how they work? And...a weird agent isn't *required*. It sort of looks like you're doing it reluctantly. If you'd rather be another normal agent, go for it. But otherwise, I think we're ready for the next step.
The next step would be Franchise creation. We'll need to answer questions like:
- Where is the franchise located? - How big is it? - How is it organized? - What kind of gear is avaliable?
I'll be in and out this afternoon, so may not be that responsive for a bit, but I'll make sure to come back to it this evening to see how the discussion has gone.

Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
There's a thread of academia in the character backstories, so the franchise could be in a university town, perhaps as an industry partner of the Faculty of Paranormal Studies. If so, then many of the franchise staff could be students doing a prac subject. And maybe the franchise owner is a current or former dean.

Oh, I didn't realize that. The Startup Guide's examples seemed more narrow to me (books, computers, feats of strength, flirting).
Hmmmm... Tennis could come in handy for Contacts ("Tennis, anyone?" to defuse tension, OR "You have a familiar face... didn't you round out our doubles with Jack that one time out in Temecula?" to establish a rapport with a difficult NPC).
Technology is harder... ("The ectoplasmic formation shimmmered before them, and as Nandini watched, she realized that its tense, tightly packed lattice shape reminded her of nothing so much as a racket... maybe it could be snapped!")
Academics is really a stretch unless we use it for applied physics or our research leads us into investigating an old tennis champ or something... I need to think about this one more, or think of a new Talent, perhaps.

Oh, I'm totally happy with it - didn't realise that they weren't in the startup.
Basically, a weird agent can't gain any franchise dice, but has freakish stats and powers. You're allowed one per group. I also don't get paid, because I can't really have a normal life. Just leave the tap on and the window open, I'll be happy.

I reckon you could stick with it and see what kind of tennisy stories it inspires. While you're tinkering with the character sheet, I think you spent one too many points on abilities (should be a total of nine points for non-weird agents).

Good catch on the stats. As for the Talent, we can certainly run with it, or if Krishna thinks of something new before the job actually starts, he can just let us know.

I've seen a number of start-up companies arise from university research, so sure, this makes good sense. (Now I'm thinking out loud here...) A university professor has some new theories, so he/she establishes an Inspectres franchise in town to put some of those theories to the test. I could totally see this happening in Berkeley. Flora, a botany professor from UC Davis (a university with a strong agricultural history (my wife has a Botany M.S. from UC Davis ) *and* strong ties with UC Berkeley) could have been pulled into this by the Berkeley professor after her "accident" took place, or maybe it's even Flora herself who's established the franchise.
More thoughts?
Edited because I couldn't stand the bad grammar staring me in the face. Alas, it stands in the quote box below.

Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
Oh, sorry, let's re-tool Nandini's stats. I'll take a point from Athletics. It seems to me it would be more useful (meta-gaming, obviously), to have one maxed-out stat in something others don't seem to have (Technology), especially given that there is already one balanced character, and a couple of decent Athletics skills in the party.
I'll re-post the updated character bio once I figure out a suitable replacement for Talent: Tennis, since I had thougth that a former athlete might have a 2. Of course, the repetitive stress injury & tennis elbow could be said to have restricted her Athletics further, to a 1 instead of a 2, because she's in excruciating pain when she attempts anything with her right arm...?
But for now, here are Nandini's stats: Academics: 3 Athletics: 1 Technology: 4 Contact: 1

Re: Play-by-Forum session to be named later
One thing I was tossing around in my head. Feel free to use it for inspiration, or to just use it...
Talent: Tennis Camp Addict
You loved the learning opportunities, you loved the coaching, you loved the cameraderie with the other tennis players. Too bad you weren't that good (Athletics 1).
I think it'd be possible to apply this in a lot of different ways:
- Academics: You've seen so many coaching styles, you can more easily pick out the ideas when someone is explaining them to you.
- Athletics: You've been coached at tennis so much, anything athletic that relates to a tennis activity you can do a bit better by proper placement, technique, etc. (i.e., by *knowing* it better as opposed to by having better talent)
- Technology: You have pretty good knowledge of the machinery common to tennis camps, like tennis ball shooters (or whatever they're called ).
- Contact: Having been to so many camps, you can often find someone you've met at some camp somewhere.
Anyway, just an example.
