Indeed; this is a known issue. I'm not sure whether it's something that the designers will be looking at soon through.
Aside from 'less than' symbols (which are affected because they start HTML tags) there are also issues with parsing certain URLs (notably any archived pages stored by the Internet Archive).
No fair! They're using brains against us! We removed our brains to make room for guns and explosives!
Not privy to the programming behind the Geek (but a programmer and designer of web based applications) this is usually to prevent the easy posting of malicious scripts.
