Does Mouse Guard also have the complex verbal and physical combat system that is in Burning Wheel?

In Burning Wheel there are multiple conflict systems from Fight! to Duel of Wits, Range and Cover, etc. In Mouse Guard, aside from simple and contested checks (also in Burning Wheel), there is just the one in depth conflict system - conflict. While not simple, I consider the streamlined system a feature of Mouse Guard.

Yes, this really is what I looked like when I uploaded that avatar. Not that it's quite current anymore.

Mouse Guard's conflict system can be used for Duel of Wits, but it doesn't have a separate system for each kind of conflict.

There are specific examples for duel of wits.

How does combat work?

Can I use the Burning Wheel Battle of Wits in Mouse Guard, is it compatible?

Thanks,

A ddisposition is generated.

A team scripts 3 actions, 1 per member; if 2 members, one member takes 2 actions; if 4 or 5 members, those who didn't take an action last round MUST take one this round.
There are 4 choices: Attack, Defend, Feint, Maneuver.
The resolution table is simplified, but works like any BW conflict actions table, tho without the specific skill linkages.

Attacks and Feints act to reduce opponent disposition
Defend acts to both prevent damage and to restore lost disposition.
Maneuver generates bonus dice or disarms opponents.

The GM (possibly based upon player suggestions) picks which skills are used for which actions in this conflict. Attack and Feint often are the same, and defend and maneuver sometimes are.

THe skills have the same ranges, but there are fewer skills in MG, and they don't all line up. It's doable, but not needed. MG's conflict is more flexible, and due to the lower numbers of skills, easier to run and to grasp.

DOW was the basis from which MG Conflict was simplified.

Furthermore, the Mouse Guard rulebook explains how to use Conflict to handle different situations, for example chases, volleys, combats, arguments, being swept away by a river, etc. The one system can be used flexibly any time you want to "zoom in" on the action for a play-by-play. One great aspect of Conflict is that you have fewer rules to learn and its fun to come up with creative ways to use it rather than having lots of rules to learn and specific circumstances in which you use them. For my tastses though, in either game I'd use the "zoomed in" systems sparingly (once or twice a session, max) to cover pivotal events and use simple/contested checks to settle the majority of outcomes.

I am shopping for a system that handles verbal conflict. Can you show me an example, including a dice rolls, on how a combat works. I played Burning Wheel at a con and was fascinated by the verbal combat system. Since I was new most of the work was done by the GM so I did not catch the details of the combat system.

I read that Mouse Guard is a streamlined, and easier system than the Burning Wheel.

Could you show me how a verbal combat works in Mouse Guard, including dice rolls?

Check out the wonderfully good multiple part Walking Eye coverage of Mouse Guard if you haven't already. I think it was what sold me on the game in the first place. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Across a couple episodes of the podcast, they do actual play followed by a designer interview and full review. It also got me through some really tedious commuting (though Boston traffic is nothing compared to LA).

I think if you liked the DoW from Burning Wheel, you'll really like the conflict system in MG - it's very similar but easier to learn. MG is a great game (so is Burning Wheel!)

I could, but I won't, as others have done so in various podcasts.

The process is EXACTLY the same as with group-vs-group Duel of Wits, save for the reduced number of options to pick from.
