Although I prefer to play one of these, I would definitely use many of them as resource material. The Imperial Encyclopedia of MegaTraveller is mostly usable with Classic, for example.

As a special bonus question: Do you think T5 will ever actually come out, or is it going to take Duke Nukem Forever's place as "Synonym for Vapourware"? :)

It's not flamebait, i'm genuinely curious if anyone has an opinion. I was tracking down a collection-list of Traveller books recently and searched for ages for information about T5, and was unable to find anything.
The best I could find seem to be that a "beta" version was released by Marc Miller at one point, and it was announced as "imminent release", but that was several years ago. There was a lot of hype about it being the definitive Marc Miller Traveller, everything he wanted T4 to be and more so I was quite excited.
That announcement was a few years ago now however, and I haven't been able to find any information as all after it. I thought for a while that it had already come out but was spectacularly unsuccessful but that doesn't seem to have been the case. Does anyone have any other information?
(And while i'm asking questions of Traveller fans, how close is Mongoose's version to the classic?)

I'm not surprised by the distributions of answers (at least so far). You did, however, miss the important question:

I believe the mention of it being flamebait is because the lack of momentum on the release of T5 is an absolute embarrassment. Quite honestly, it's easier to pretend nothing is wrong with the T5 concept than to actually fix the problem, and that mindset seems to be the status quo when it comes to T5. The "beta" is the only thing for T5 that currently exists, and from what I have seen of the beta, in my opinion the game is currently in an unplayable state.
I was one of those that was going to wait for T5, rather than look at what Mongoose was producing. But as year after year dragged on with nothing to show for it except an unplayable beta, I said "to hell with it" and bought a copy of the Mongoose Traveller core rulebook. And you know, it's not bad at all. I like the tweaks Mongoose put into the system, especially the unified core mechanic. It won't replace Classic for me, but not because of anything wrong with the game. I'm simply the type that feels the oldest ruleset is the best, since it is closest to the author's intent.
I would say that Mongoose Traveller replicates the feel of Classic Traveller, but there are enough differences in the game mechanics that you could get tripped up. The good news is that adventures for Mongoose Traveller (IMO) should be easily ported to Classic.

Size of available bays, USP rating system, combat mechanics. Otherwise, not much. CGen is the same, basics of design are the same.
Marc might be willing to sell you a PDF of the '79... email marc @ farfuture . net and ask him.
I keep hoping Marc will do a CD of "Deprecated Products of Traveller"... 1st edition CT (in several editions), HG' 79.
As to it being terribly important... not really. Actually, rather meaningless, since almost no one uses HG'79 if they have HG'80. (And I don't appreciate people adding other polls to my thread, especially when they are both so narrow and poorly constructed. Not to mention meaningless to those of us who reject CT mechanics.)
Oh, and there is a THIRD version of HG... the combat mechanics were updated in JTAS, as well.

No power points from memory.

Don't take it so seriously, it was intended in jest

No power points from memory. True. And no Agility, either. It's a clear change from CT 1E, however, as it requires PP for Jump drive (unlike CT 1E, but like CT 2E).
On the other hand, the percentages are all the same.

I've never played either, but always been tempted. I was thinking, as a new Traveller, if I was going in i'd likely go in with Mongoose. T20 is tempting as well, if only because I understand the d20 system already.
What really attracts me to Traveller though is the Imperium setting, and adjustments in the timeline aside, that seems to carry through regardless of the ruleset ;)

Well, if looking for the 3I, it's not in the MGT core... and it's barely in the CT core.
The 3I setting was developed in supplements and adventures in CT; there are small hints of it in the core rules, but not much. It's present (and in a civil war) in the MT rules, but there is plenty there to simply ignore the civil war. It's essentially absent in TNE; TNE uses the setting, but the 3I isn't really present, and there isn't enough to run it in the 3I T4 has the 3I at its start; you can't run the classic era, as the core rules don't give you the needed tech levels! GT is an alternate timeline and has LOADS of detail added; too much detail by some accounts. GTIW is well before the Third Imperium... some 2500 years before. T20 is 100 years before CT, but the setting materials in the core are not that much. It is, however, tailored for CT era. MGT moves the 3I setting off to a separate sub-line; not even all items in the core book are suitable for the 3I setting as previously written. And the aliens books for mongoose ... the are to the CT versions as the 2009 Star Trek movie was to ST TOS...

Some people on the Internet would have you believe that you're not playing Traveller unless you're using the Third Imperium setting as written, without deviation or interpretation. Don't listen to those people.
Use what you want, and ditch the rest. I do it, and have absolutely no problem with it. Because it's your game, and your rules.
