I am reading the rules through for the first time and am not sure by what it means when it says "+ effect" in regards to a skill or weapon.

For instance on page 65 under THROWN WEAPONS it says:

"If the attack fails, the projectile scatters in a random direction for (6 + effect) metres."

how would you determine exactly how far the thrown item is displaced... I guess, ultimately, I'm just not understanding what the term "+ effect" is supposed to mean.

On page 50 it explains Effect: it's a degree of success (or failure.)

Edit: I've got the LBB version of the rules. Look in the index at the back under 'Effect' if the page numbers don't jive.

Effect is how much more you rolled than the target number (8), so if you rolled 10 on a test, you pass with effect of 2. As discribed in the rules, failures have negative effect (so getting a total of 6 means you have effect -2), but in situations like the quote you give, I think you can assume MGP forgot the sign implication ;-)
