Im slightly confused as to what exactly a character does when they level up.

Would someone mind explaining each step, I know this is pretty basic stuff but the little blurb they give on it doesnt give me enough info for someone who has never played before. soblueblush

You need to look at both Table 3-1 (on page 30) and the table for whatever class is gaining a level. Table 3-1 will indicate if you gain a new feat or ability bonus. The class dependent table will tell you if they gain an improvement to their base attack bonus and saves. If they do, you add this to their existing values (not the total bonus listed, just the increase from the previous level). The class table will also list any special things gained at that level too. The class listing will also tell you how many hit points and skill ranks they get to add. Remember to add your Con modifier to your hit points gained, and your Int modifier to your skill ranks gained. If you have gained a level of your favored class, you can add either +1 Hit point or + 1 skill rank.

I might be forgetting something, but that's the basics of levelling up.

Edit: There is a little more info here: http://rpggeek.com/thread/456960/another-dumb-question-how-t...

Ah! Ok thanks much Devon! The dice part was throwing me for the new HP. So for the Barbarian when it gains a level I would roll a D12 since thats its HD and add whatever I roll to my total HP.

Thanks for the clarification on the saves and BAB, I wasnt sure if they were cumulative or if a +2 became a +3 etc with each level. Glad its the latter.

Don't forget to add his constitution modifier to the result of his D12.
