I think the Starter Set is fine. I wouldn't program in BASIC, but you got to start somewhere!
btw, WotC has the H1 free download, with Quick Start rules. The Starter Set doesn't have pregeneraed characters, so you'll find the H1's pregens useful.

I am learning from the Red Box (and DMing a group of newbies no less!) And I don't think it's so bad.
The reason I never got into D&D previously (4E) was because after reading through the PHBs I knew that I could pick it up, but that finding a group willing to patiently take on a noob while they stumbled through all that content would be tough. For me, creating my own group was easier.
The Starter Kit products try to get you up and running as fast as possible without giving you to many options and rules and by glossing over a lot of the stat mechanics. That's also the downside, though. For most of the stats and such, they just give you a number without explaining where it comes from. I think the Red Box content REALLY needs to go along with the Essentials Rules Compendium, and then it makes a lot more sense. I understand that they didn't bundle it together, though, because it's easier to sell a $20 buy-in than a a $40 one.
Still, it's not the end of the world if you get something wrong. Just fix it in the next session and keep the game moving from there. Besides, it's only one level until you get to regular Essentials rules, and nothing to get your undies in a twist about.
Also, you don't have to re-roll your character to carry on from Red Box to Essentials, just download the character conversion doc from WoTC. It's two pages, and the changes are minor. I gave the doc to my players beforehand, so they knew what to expect.
