One of my favorite hardcore old-school modules was S1: Tomb of Horrors. Just brutal. Anyone got this yet that played the original and got any quick comparisons?

I haven't seen the super-module yet, but I think the DM Reward Programversion is the only one that is actually trying to recreate the original module.

I just picked it up last night - haven't read it more than a quick skim through.
It looks pretty good - If I get a chance to run an encounter, I'll write up a review (or even if I don't get a chance I suppose )
Edited to say that I already added it to the db (entered it last night). Here is the linky: Tomb of Horrors Hardcover

I'll give you a taste of what is in the 160 page book:
Tomb of Horrors Introduction wrote: The 4th Edition Tomb of Horrors is not a simple conversion of the original adventure. Why not? In addition to the fact that many players are familiar with the original adventure in one way or another, the game play and design aesthetics of the game have evolved over the various editions; it would be doing both the 4th edition game and the original adventure a disservice for us to simply convert the latter to the former and call it a day. Instead, this adventure involves the characters in Acererak's ongoing schemes, exploring not one but three other "tombs of horror," created by the demilich for his own inscrutable purposes. Like the 2nd Edition game's boxed set "Return to the Tomb of Horrors" by Bruce R. Cordell, this adventure builds on Acererak's legacy and finds inspiration in the original.
There are 4 locations outlined in the book: 1) The Garden of Graves, which contains introductory information and 11 encounters 2) Tomb of Shadows, which contains introductory information of its own along with 11 encounters 3) Skull City, more intro info and then 11 encounters 4) Dead God's Tomb, which happens to contain 12 encounters (with the appropriate background intro info of course)
The introductory information contains more than just a paragraph, it contains an adventure overview, hooks, extensive backgrounds, and some maps.
Scattered throughout the book are pages of pictures to show the players when they reach an appropriate area, much like the original Tomb of Horrors did, but these are in full color.
so... looks pretty cool right now.
Just to clarify though, it is NOT meant to be run straight through all four areas in consecutive order as if it were one giant adventure module. The four areas are meant to be sprinkled into your campaign as you see fit.

I got it - checking it out - so far it looks pretty brutal. But I'm not a good judge of high level adventures... having not gotten past 5th level of 4ed yet.

Yep that was 12 Power Grid maps back to back over two days. Worth doing, but possibly not in such a concentrated burst.
Ooh yes, now a little to the left - my nose is itchy. No, no the other left! Now what colour is 12 supporter badge going to be I wonder?
-
Is it just me, or does this feel somewhat incomplete without the "S1" bit?

Speaking as someone who has been running 20th level adventures... you're missing some good times, Aldie!

Is it actually out in Australia yet? A lot of the 4E releases seem to arrive a month after they're released in the US.

Dunno. I haven't bought any new D&D stuff since 2nd ed
We got given a copy of 3rd edition rules not long before they went out of date

All of the commercial softcover adventures for 4E do have a code... H1-3, P1-3, E1-3, HS1, HS2. None of the hardcover adventures do (Return of the Giants, Tomb of Horrors).
It's a something of a pity that they don't use the codes any more. On the other hand, you have duplication and they can get rather long and confusing...

I bought this by accident. It was late, I was tired, no I hadn't been drinking.

Still, I did want it. Although I'm not running D&D4 at the moment. Actually I've never run it, but will once the Dark Sun setting comes out. So I'll try and fit this in, but that means getting the group high enough to play it.
