I bought my Ubiquity dice at Gencon 09. I had just done a successful half a demo at the Hollow Earth Expedition booth and was buying the main book, sensing blood in the water, the salesman upsold me on the dice. I don't regret the purchase at all.

First I'm a sucker for oddball dice, second, when we were playing HEX we certainly got our use out of them.

The Ubiquity dice are a set of 9 eight sided dice, 3 white, 3 red and 3 blue, designed to simulate flipping 1, 2, or 3 coins respectively. So the white die, which is one coin flip, has four 1's, and four 0's on it, giving you a 50/50 result. The red die, two 2's, four 1's and two 0's. the blue die, one 0, three 1's three 2's and one 3 on it.

Normally in HEX you would roll any normal even sided die and count odds or evens. For example each even number on 4d6 being a success, this is probably easier than flipping a coin 4 times. But with the ubiquity dice you could just roll a blue (3 flip) die and a white (1 flip) die, or two red (two flip) dice and get the same results, rolling fewer dice and getting a quicker result. This fits well with the game itself, which while having a fair bit of crunch to the rules, plays very quickly.

The dice are I would say standard quality gamer dice. They come in a standard dice tube. They could certainly be recreated pretty easily by remarking extra 8 sided dice, but you could also just roll your current dice and take evens as well, so I'm not sure the extra effort would be worth it.

When we were playing HEX the three of us shared the dice, they were incredibly easy to adapt to and I think they added to the game experience. They aren't essential to the experience at all, but if you are enjoying the game already, I say support your local game company and pick them up.

Thanks for pointing these out! They'd also be useful for Prince Valiant: The Storytelling Game and other dice pool games that use 50% results.

My pic. of the statue in Boston honoring Robert Gould Shaw and the 54th Mass. Regiment. The movie "Glory" is a must-see!

I bought several sets so my players could use them if they wanted. We recently had our first session. Of 4 players, three used the U. dice!!! One preferred to count the even numbers for successes, which was fine, of course. I had a couple of sets of U. dice behind the screen for my OWN use...

Yes, this really is what I looked like when I uploaded that avatar. Not that it's quite current anymore.

No good for the Burning Wheel, Burning Empires, nor Mouse Guard games; they use 50%, but have special effects on 6's; BW has some specials on 1's at times, too.
