Prelude - The Tavern
The barkeep, Sama, has been busily serving patrons this fine fall day. The harvest festival is nearly upon the town and the locals are getting in their last cozy visits to their favorite watering hole before tourists flourish here and take the place over for a week. You’ve already been mistaken for a harvest-goer by more than a few locals. You look around and see a few friendly faces among the crowd. Perhaps one of them would make a fine adventuring partner on your journey. Then again, it may be best to go this alone. That choice remains yours. In the meantime, one well-dressed halfling patron, who may have had more than his share of ale, comes up to you and offers to play a simple game for a wager. He describes the game as follows:

~ The Barbarian Dice Game ~

“You see, it’s easy. Even a child can play! This game requires us to cast these strangely shaped gaming pieces which the gods call ‘dice’. I’ve got five such pieces, one with four sides, one with six sides, one with eight, one with ten and one with twelve. For some reason, Barbarians are fondest of the 12-sider but I’ve no idea why. Anyway, we roll all five dice each and we compare results. For every like-sided die that you roll higher on, you get a point. Whomever has the most points is the winner. You, fine friend, break all ties. How can you lose?! What do you say? Shall we wager?”

You may decline to play or you can wager 1 or 2 gold. This game is available to both you and your adventuring partner separately if playing in a 2P game. The choice is now yours. If you decide to wager and play, please use the geek-randomizer to roll five separate rolls: 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10 and 1d12.

[You also start with 4 Sanity Points, btw. Your exposure to Arkham Horror doesn't protect you from this adventure...goo )

You don't know if your words were heard, or if it is just coincidence, but right after you finish speaking a section of the mural responds to your touch. A secret exit opens before you, which leads out the back of the palace.. That mural wasn’t a prediction at all! Happy to be free of the oppressive silence and many staring eyes of the palace, you run down the trail with a renewed sense of courage and lightness in your step. You are closer than ever to finding the secret to everlasting paradise.

Chapter 5 - The Tomb of the Ancients

Chapter 5-1 Great Stone Maze

Behind the palace the path leads to a lush forest. Soon the trail becomes narrow and you come upon a large stone archway. You continue on and find yourself among the twists and turns of several narrow passageways. The stone walls are 20 feet high and contain symbols and pictures.

You come to a dead end. Backtracking, you find the last intersection and pick a new direction. Again you reach a dead end. After several dead ends and retracing of steps, you find yourself at an impossible intersection with 12 narrow passageways shooting off in different directions, like the spokes of a wheel. At the center of the intersection is a large stone with flowing script etched upon it. It reads:

Ten Eyes I have, and each stares at you,

You are caught in my trap, and safe passages are few.

Left, Right, and side to side,

My eyes catch you in the crossfire, you cannot hide.

If you choose wrongly I will feed you to the thing that is always hungry,

If you choose correctly you will see the thing that the gods never see.

Please choose a passage to travel down and also make a Willpower challenge roll with your selection. In a 2P game, please keep your discussion as to which passage to take via private geekmail so as not to give any spoilers away from people who might see your discussion. If you choose correctly, you will get a bonus to your roll (but the GM will not reveal if you are correct or not so as not to spoil the fun for others).

Turning for a few moments that oddly feels like and eternity, I take a deep breath, and then head down path 6. My roll will not have Idols Blessing again as I am uncertain if it applies.

You move down the passageway as fast as you can. There are triangles etched into the walls and they appear to be blinking at you. You hear movement and rumbling behind you. Something is chasing you! The breathing of a feral creature sounds in your ears, snorting and chomping. The passage starts to twist and turn. The etchings on the wall getting smaller and then larger. You see an angry eye floating in front of you and you stop and blink. You feel the heat of invisible flames burning into your mind. The sounds are all around you now, the breathing and snorting, the eye in front of you, your mind is racing, you can see nothing but the eye now, the terrible eye...

lose 1 SP.

The line between reality and fantasy has blurred to the point where you can no longer distinguish it. Visions, thoughts and feelings blend together into a jumbled mess. Perhaps this is all a dream? After all, these horrors can’t be real... can they? Or, just maybe, you are now one of the horrors you sought to defeat. Forever trapped in a mortal shell in an endless struggle to stop other would-be adventurers from going where you have gone.

Your adventure has concluded, brave adventurer. We want to thank you for playing The Mountains of Madness. Within a few days you will receive all microbadges and geekgold due - please be patient. In the meantime, we invite you to kick back at the Tavern of the Falling Leaves for some stories both brave and bold. You can enter the tavern by clicking here. The design team and GMs that brought you this adventure feed off of the stories told in the Tavern - so please feel free to contribute to the post-adventure fun! In addition, we would love for you to rate this adventure - you can do so by visiting the official Mountains of Madness RPG entry and at the bottom you can ‘Add Information’ to give it a rating and comment.

I received a copy of L5R 4th edition. I love this game, and it now has pride of place in my backpack. I can't wait to get to running it and introduce new peeps to Rokugan.
Of course, I must now complete my collection with the rest of the L5R titles. Darn you Cthanta, I know there'd be a catch!

Thank you to my Cthanta. Now, reveal your identity I say!

I loved taking part in this. It was much fun and contributed to a brilliant Christmas. Thanks one and all.
Have a great new year.

RPG: Legend of the Five Rings (4th Edition) [Average Rating:8.15 Overall Rank:18]

My thoughts: Character creation for Legend of the Five rings is quick, easy and clean. You pick you character's family, clan and school, spend 40 experience points, and you're as good as done. There are no random elements, and if the game master explains to the players what kind of campaign he intends to run, there is little chance of anyone ending up with a useless character. Of course, the game limits you to only creating samurai-type characters, not that this is a bad thing.

Since I am fairly new the L5R, the background for my four characters are rather thin. I also discovered that there are no Rokugan (or Japanese ) names that begin with the letter “L”, so Lucas got a make-over for this on.

The Expendables of the Emerald Magistrates
A hidden threat lurks in Rokugan. A sinister conspiracy plans to bring great doom down on the Empire, and someone has to stop it. Emerald champion Shosuro Jimen wants to root this taint out, but needs agents in the field. He has designated the characters as emerald magistrates, and has tasked them with following several leads. He hopes they will gather enough information about the cult's leader, the enigmatic Kanko, before they get to close, and risk being killed.

Kitsu Jamato
Kitsu Jamato is a proud lion samurai. He believes strongly in his clan's heritage, and hopes to live his life as a paragon of the bushido tenets. This sometimes blinds him to the reality of the way Rokugan sometimes work.

To the outside, Kazo seems far more honourable than other Crabs, he plays the part well. But those that can see through that, will see a man that has little regard or respect for the society he is part of.

I give the Legend of the Five Rings RPG a 9, and it's art a 10. The RPG is great among RPGs. I just think the art is just greater among art. I rate the card game a 10, so I can't rate it's art higher, but the RPG does share art with it.

Candi's here and ready to rock the dungeon's socks off!

I will be represented by:

Nimble - Strength -2, Dexterity +5, Intelligence +2, Attack +2
Notes: Can overcome any one Skill Challenge (not a Monster nor Role-Play Encounter) instantly and unerringly. Can only be used once in the entire adventure and must be done in place of a challenge roll (not after).
Background: Lurking in shadows and being opportunistic has allowed Nimble to thrive. Let the others do the hard work and be there for the cleanup.

We don't wear socks...my minions hate doing laundry.

Level 1 - Room 1 - Entryway
Leaving the safety of the outside world, you have descended into a small square room, roughly 20 feet across in all directions. Your torchlight illuminates the entire room. The floor is rough, uneven stone and there are a few small bones in one corner. Giving the bones a quick poke with your sword yields nothing - you decide these are not valuable enough to bother with. Plus, old bones in a deadly dungeon is a bad omen. Seeing nothing of interest, you make your way across the room to an exit on the opposite side.

Level 1 Challenge: 1d100 = (42) = 42

The chamber starts to fill with water! Make an Intelligence Check at DR12 to find the release mechanism or suffer 3 damage.

This is a Skill Challenge. To pass this challenge, you will use the Geek Randomizer to roll 1d20 and add in your relevant modifier. So if this is a Dexterity check and your Dexterity Modifier is +2, you would enter 1d20+2 into the die roller. Do this now. Future skill challenges will assume you know how to make this check. Please make your check now.

May as well have put a 3 legged cat into that battle...

Candi previously rolled 1d20+3 = (9) + 3 = 12
Kobold 1d20-1 = (11) - 1 = 10

The monster is defeated! Well done, adventurer. You search the body of the slain monster and discover:

Level 3 Treasure: 1d100 = (70) = 70

Medium Gem
Worth 10 Gold! (all gold will be converted to geekgold)

Level 3 - Room 3 - Chamber of Despair
The room you have entered fills you with dread and despair. A heaviness permeates your inner being and you find it hard to press on. Is your light getting dimmer here? Maybe it’s just your imagination. In any event, you pick your feet up and manage to stagger across the room. Not paying careful attention you bump into something and fall prone! Reaching up, you can barely lift your head to see you are in front of a small well. On the outside, written in the same Runic language that permeates this place, it says HOPE. You cup your hand and pull up some cool water from the shallow well.

You may (but do not have to) drink from this well. The choice is yours. If you do drink, the outcome is determined by you rolling a d20 and consulting this table:

01-03 - The water tastes foul! Take 5 points of damage.
04-08 - The water is bitter. Take 2 points of damage.
09-13 - The water is cool but has no other effect.
14-16 - The water is cool and refreshing. Regain 2 hit points.
17-18 - The water is cool and refreshing. Regain 4 hit points
19-20 - The water is cool and refreshing. Regain 2 hit points and discover a treasure in the well!

Make your choice to drink or not now!

I actually have an irrational fear of cats, so maybe that would've been better... who are you, red-bolded-text voice in my head? And why do I feel I shouldn't have told you that?

Gulping Candi peers into the well...if it's poisoned, I'm dead.. he thought, looking briefly at the large gashes in his side and wondering briefly where his spleen had gotten to before recalling the bug bear he had met several rooms ago.

Well... I suppose you only live once - at the very least, I could hallucinate and go mad!

1d20 = (4) = 4

In my next life... I hope I'm a Denzien in the Dungeon of Doom - seems like a real charmer's job.

Sweet, sweet Iocane powder...gets 'em every time!!

Suffer 2 damage (you now have 0 hitpoints remaining).

You have descended into the depths of the Dungeon of Doom and have died. With a hero’s resolve you withstood what you could but in the end the forces of darkness were simply too much for you to overcome. A valiant attempt - your next of kin recover your treasures and so your legacy lives on.

Thank you for playing in the RPG Geek Dungeon of Doom. Your initial geeklist post above has been tipped by your Dungeon Master the amount of geekgold equal to the gold you have found in the dungeon (other adventurers may also tip you as they feel appropriate). Any items you found will be given to you as microbadges shortly.

You are free to post on the The Official Dungeon of Doom Commiseration Thread to discuss your victory or defeat. Your DMs don’t want to hear your bad beat story - they have other adventures to run! Go to the tavern like other slain heroes and tell the bartender instead.

Farewell, brave adventurer! Until our next Encounter...

This book looks so great and altough I'm not really an oriental fan this game is so high on my want to play list. Looking forward at giving it a go and I know have the Quickstart. So I hope I will get it on the table soon.

This game seems so widely loved but, like many long standing games/campaign settings, it seems like there is a lot to know in terms of setting fluency.

It can be played that way, but it's really about a) exploring Asian Cinema tropes and b) Exploring a new set of cultural rules. I guess it depends on how 'into it' the person running the game is.

I play the card game and would be interested in trying out the RPG if anyone is willing to put up with a newbie.

Haven't played in years, have never played PbF.

I missed the games that interest me in the PbF for Newbies thread.
