30 pages

Just about everything you need (except the usual absurd amount of detail) is included in “Book 0: An Introduction to Traveller”, a 2008 Free RPG Day booklet. This is 32 pages, and the page count is deducted by two as you technically don’t need the table of contents or character sheet.

8. Pathfinder vs. 57. Traveller (Mongoose)

Traveller Mongoose is the slicked-up granddaddy of Scifi games and won't be easy to stop.

Yes, this really is what I looked like when I uploaded that avatar. Not that it's quite current anymore.

I ran a game set in a custom setting over the spring and summer.

We had fun, but, in the process, I came strongly to realize... Mongoose has no F*ING clue. It is positively chock full of stupid rules in the expansions. And I do mean STUPID. Buy the core. Then run, don't walk, run away from the rest of the game line.

Lots of bad ideas in the expansions, coupled with authors writing about things that they didn't know and didn't bother with even 15 minutes of real research.

Example: "Merchant Marines" being used for merchant security forces. Author is a complete moron to not know nor be able to check that it means the merchant service as a whole.

I probably will not run MGT as MGT ever again. Character gen is incredible, for a randomized system, but the rest of the mechanics are mediocre (I prefer MegaTraveller combat, for example, and CT Bk5 or T20 ship building).

During MCU:Gotham's summer haitus (the core players demanded a season two), I sat on a game of Traveller. I've played the original version... well, actually I played around with the character creation tables, having fun making characters and accidentally getting them killed off before I could play them. I think I came up with a really cool guy that was 52 when he started his adventuring career. That was a big change from D&D's teenage adventurers.

Anyway. Tried as hard as we could, nobody died in the Mongoose version. I don't think you can actually get killed off in character creation anymore, which was a big disappointment.

My character almost died when a crewmember used the ship's laser to shoot a giant bug off the hoversled I was driving. Good times.

From a new school SF RPG (Burning Empires) to an Old School RPG with a new face. Because of scheduling foul up, I had only two players and pitched the adventure I'd prepared and made one up off the cuff. It was fun but the rules didn't do much for me. If I were to run a space opera type campaign I would use the new Starblazer Adventures rather than Traveller.

I've never played Starblazer but aren't they aimed at rather different sorts of SF. Traveller is more for the serious straight SF games, Starblazer for comic-book space opera.

Certainly if I was thinking of Flash Gordon style stories then Starblazer is what I would pick.

Yeah, I think I realized that too late after the fact. Traveller for Hard-ish Imperial sci-fi, SBA for free-wheeling space opera. I mean, you certainly can do space opera with Traveller, but I like SBA's application of the FATE system for that sort of thing, but that's me.
