I've had multiple forays with WFRP2. I like the system and most of the setting, but I have to admit that the Chaos elements - particularly all of the mutant stuff - isn't my bag. That's unfortunate since that's a signature part of the setting and appears in almost all of the published adventures.

Adventure Awaits...

The Old World. A dark and grim place filled with peril and riven by war. From the teeming cities of the Empire to the Elf haunted forests to the lofty crags of the Worlds' Edge mountains where Dwarfs battle with Goblins and their vile kin, a shadow hangs over the world, cast by the dark corrupting hand of Chaos. All along its borders, the Old World's greatest nation, the Empire, seeks to hold back the dark tide. But even within the Empire there are enemies. Twisted cultists seek to bring about the Empire's fall, cold-hearted Beastmen stalk the forests, and loathsome Skaven ratmen spread plague and sickness from their suburban lairs.

In Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, you are unlikely heroes in a grim world of perilous adventure. You venture into the dark corners of the Empire and deal with the threats that others cannot or will not face. You'll probably die alone in some festering hellhole, but maybe, just maybe, you'll survive foul Mutants, horrible diseases, insidious plots, and sanity-blasting rituals to reap Fate's rewards.

A slim man comes to you. He smiles meekly, but his hands shake while he brings you a bottle of Southland Brandy from the bar. You motion him to sit. He sits and bends forward. You do the same. Now that he's near you can see his eyelids traced with black and red for lack of sleep.
"If I get up from this table," he wispers, "I'm a dead man. You're my last hope..."

I'll need 1 to 3 players for this very short adventure.

I'll present you with up to 9 pre-generated characters to choose from. Choose wisely, a man's life, and yours, will be soon at stake.

I want to thank you for the time you put into this adventure - not just being our GM but also for the work you've put into designing it.

It's the first time I've done anything like this before and it was a really great experience (apart from Crissie going insane on the penultimate test!)

The adventure is really well-written and I can't wait to get to the tavern and start reading the other experiences - I hope we'll get a full plan of the activity once it's over.

Hope to game with you again.

Peter

Thanks very much Peter! It was a lot of fun to both write and GM - yes a lot of time, but it's great to put something back into the site. I'm really glad you enjoyed it, especially if it was your first time doing something similar!

Do check out the Tavern thread (where I've already introduced you as victors) - there are lots of great stories there already, and you'll find out some details. Once the event is over, we will be releasing the whole document as well.

Best,
Steve

This was good - even the mad 'yak' episode at the end, not that I didn't want to survive! I hope we gave you a giggle as we went along and hopefully we didn't make you cringe too much being new to this.

Thank you for your time and effort - until the next one

Good luck (boy will you need it):

The Eye of the Gods. For as long as you can remember, your father searched for the Eye. The gateway to a new world and a life of everlasting peace. Some say it’s a myth. Others say it existed once but the fates have destroyed it to prevent contamination of our world with a would-be-paradise. But a few believe. Your father got close - and promised that after he found the portal, he would return and take you and your mother through to a safe place, free from the daily worries and dangers that plague the world you live in now. That was almost 20 years ago - and he never returned from his expedition to the Greymoor Mountains. The Mountains of Madness, or so they are known, have long been a mysterious place which few mortals dared to cross. They are so named because many who attempt to cross them wind up with few wits with which to cope with life. The terrible creatures are only part of the problem - and the slow march into derangement has claimed more than a few poor souls.

In the fateful days leading up to your decision to follow in your father’s footsteps there was much trepidation. You tried to make it in this harsh world but too often life’s pains bore down on you. The time has come for action. You gather what few bits of equipment you own and head to the Tavern of The Falling Leaves.

Your equipment currently consists of: Rusty Longsword (+0), well-worn Tunic, some old Leather Boots and 2 gold pieces.

Prelude - The Tavern
The barkeep, Sama, has been busily serving patrons this fine fall day. The harvest festival is nearly upon the town and the locals are getting in their last cozy visits to their favorite watering hole before tourists flourish here and take the place over for a week. You’ve already been mistaken for a harvest-goer by more than a few locals. You look around and see a few friendly faces among the crowd. Perhaps one of them would make a fine adventuring partner on your journey. Then again, it may be best to go this alone. That choice remains yours. In the meantime, one well-dressed halfling patron, who may have had more than his share of ale, comes up to you and offers to play a simple game for a wager. He describes the game as follows:

~ The Barbarian Dice Game ~

“You see, it’s easy. Even a child can play! This game requires us to cast these strangely shaped gaming pieces which the gods call ‘dice’. I’ve got five such pieces, one with four sides, one with six sides, one with eight, one with ten and one with twelve. For some reason, Barbarians are fondest of the 12-sider but I’ve no idea why. Anyway, we roll all five dice each and we compare results. For every like-sided die that you roll higher on, you get a point. Whomever has the most points is the winner. You, fine friend, break all ties. How can you lose?! What do you say? Shall we wager?”

You may decline to play or you can wager 1 or 2 gold. This game is available to both you and your adventuring partner separately if playing in a 2P game. The choice is now yours. If you decide to wager and play, please use the geek-randomizer to roll five separate rolls: 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10 and 1d12.

You feel the crushing weight of doom upon you, and the world swims before you. It is too much! The dead, the loss...you suffer 1 SP damage from the madness!

For surviving this diabolical and dangerous swamp you will receive:
mb Mountains of Madness - Desolate Swamp

Chapter 3-6 – The Lizard King
Finally! Just when you thought you could not go further, the ground beneath your feet firms up. You slowly rise from the murky swamp and now stand on dry ground. You’re laboring - but you can’t... you won’t give in!

You come up over a small hill and hear voices ahead. Approaching, you see a group of lizard-men who have gathered around a small fire. You creep closer to spy on their activities. They are cooking some animal which they have recently hunted. You deem it better to avoid them and start to move to the side. Snap! A trap is sprung... you are caught in netting and are hanging upside-down as the lizard-men spring to attention. They surround you. From the back comes a particularly tall, lean and powerful lizard-man who strides forward with purpose. He looks at you and, although it is not his native tongue, he speaks to you in your language.

“Well. A city-dweller! How unique. By the smell, it seems the swamp has taken a liking to you. My name is James. Son of Morris. I am the Lizard King, captain of my people and ruler of this swamp. Why have you come here? To Talk? To Fight?” He laughs low and deep. “I’m fine with either - but be quick about it. I’ve got a serpentine empire to build!”

The choice is yours... you may choose to talk to the Lizard King or engage in combat. If you choose to talk, simply begin your conversation with the Lizard King now. If you attack, you can assume the Lizard King is AC14 and you are free to make your four attacks now.

The Lizard King’s claws prove as terrible as they seemed, and he knocks you over and gashes your side! You suffer 2 HP damage.

You have died facing the Mountains of Madness. But let no person doubt your heart and conviction. The mortal shell which you call your body has given out. While the spirit remained willing it cannot do so without help from the flesh and blood which drives it. As light fades to black you think back over your adventure and can’t help but smile. Bravery and valor were yours, dear adventurer. And nothing can take that away.

Your adventure has concluded, brave adventurer. We want to thank you for playing The Mountains of Madness. Within a few days you will receive all microbadges and geekgold due - please be patient. In the meantime, we invite you to kick back at the Tavern of the Falling Leaves for some stories both brave and bold. You can enter the tavern by clicking here. The design team and GMs that brought you this adventure feed off of the stories told in the Tavern - so please feel free to contribute to the post-adventure fun! In addition, we would love for you to rate this adventure - you can do so by visiting the official Mountains of Madness RPG entry and at the bottom you can ‘Add Information’ to give it a rating and comment.

Level 1 - Room 1 - Entryway
Leaving the safety of the outside world, you have descended into a small square room, roughly 20 feet across in all directions. Your torchlight illuminates the entire room. The floor is rough, uneven stone and there are a few small bones in one corner. Giving the bones a quick poke with your sword yields nothing - you decide these are not valuable enough to bother with. Plus, old bones in a deadly dungeon is a bad omen. Seeing nothing of interest, you make your way across the room to an exit on the opposite side.

Level 1 Challenge 1d100 = (20) = 20

As you cross the room you face a high ledge that you must climb to continue. Make a Strength Check at DR12 or suffer 3 damage.

This is a Skill Challenge. To pass this challenge, you will use the Geek Randomizer to roll 1d20 and add in your relevant modifier. So if this is a Dexterity check and your Dexterity Modifier is +2, you would enter 1d20+2 into the die roller. Do this now. Future skill challenges will assume you know how to make this check. Please make your check now.

Level 4 - Room 2 - Echo Chamber
As you walk through this otherwise featureless room your footsteps echo loudly. It’s almost disturbing - the size and shape of the room appear to be feeding back even the smallest sounds. The more quietly you try to move, the louder the echo.

Level 4 Challenge 1d100 = (97) = 97

As you attempt to exit the room you realize the door is guarded by a devious and cunning puzzle. Make an Intelligence Check at DR18 or suffer 5 damage from the mental anguish.

Brute have no time to think of anything except death. Poor, poor brute!

You have descended into the depths of the Dungeon of Doom and have died. With a heroes resolve you withstood what you could but in the end the forces of darkness were simply too much for you to overcome. A valiant attempt - your next of kin recover your treasures and so your legacy lives on.

Thank you for playing in the RPG Geek Dungeon of Doom. Your initial geeklist post above has been tipped by your Dungeon Master the amount of geekgold equal to the gold you have found in the dungeon (other adventurers may also tip you as they feel appropriate). Any items you found beyond Armor and Weapons will be given to you as microbadges shortly.

You are free to post on the The Official Dungeon of Doom Commiseration Thread to discuss your victory or defeat. Your DMs don’t want to hear your bad beat story - they have other adventures to run! Go to the tavern like other slain heroes and tell the bartender instead.

Farewell, brave adventurer! Until our next Encounter...

I have a set of three 2nd edition Warhammer Fantasy books to trade. They are all in like new, read once condition. I would prefer to trade these as a group if possible. As always they are from a smoke free home. Please see both my BGG and RPGG want lists.

02: Call of Cthulhu vs 17 Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2

Has defeated: HERO 6, Legends of Anglerre

These two titans met last year and WFRP came off the worse for it - can it take revenge this year?

Come on, fellow RPers, how can you not vote for WFR? I mean, I can't see what's better than a little bit of Fantasy Roleplay, especially with one's wife (or significant other).

Especially when you bring your own Warhammer...... shake

I disagree. WFRP is perfectly creepy when played well, but Call can't be a sword-slinging adventure game. Therefore, WFRP is clearly better.

Warhammer 2nd Ed got to the Semifinals last year and wants to maintain that form.
