I've noticed that a lot of games have been redone and become more successful the second time around, but there seem to be a few games that had to be reworked twice to become successful.

This geeklist is intended to honor those games, game mechanics, designers, and publishers that were most successful on their third attempt.

A lot of these are probably wargames as it might be more difficult to get a historical simulation correct. Furthermore, some older wargames may have had more time to be reworked.

I'm sure that there are probably some role-playing game and video game examples too.

3rd Edition is actually a top ten (maybe top 5) game suffering from a spate of spiteful rankings reacting to the dubious threats of litigation by Games Workshop.

Might want to check again Blood Bowl: Living Rulebook is ranked higher as of the time of this writing. True that its not designed by Jervis Johnson anymore, but LRB 6.0 is much better than BB3.

There is a Third Edition of "Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign, 1815" in the database ranked lower than the First Edition. This may partially be due that fact that the original game was split out in the database with certain wargamers perhaps never ranking the other version.

However, let's look at the history of Columbia's block games instead:

Quebec 1759 (1972)
-- 1st Columbia block game
Number of User Rankings 433
Ranked 865

War of 1812 (1973)
-- 2nd Columbia block game
Number of User Rankings 417
Ranked 823

Napoleon: The Waterloo Campaign, 1815 (1974)
-- 3rd Columbia block game

The columbia "third edition" has twice as many blocks as the old AH edition. There are many of us who prefer the old version. However, it is as common as dirt and I am sure that most people who want the old version have it already!

I've seen and played all 3 editions of this game over the years, and even though the newer version has cool plastic minis, when I was thinking about offloading my 1st edition in favor of the 3rd edition, I couldn't bring myself to do it. The iconography is better in 1st version and the rules tweaks in the later versions don't really add anything (Hidden gems of various values help prevent some of "gang up on the leader" syndrome, but also some of the fun). I'll hang onto my 1st edition, thanks.

Interesting GeekList.

Wargames are never really "finished" since customer playtesting and developments in the hobby frequently spark improvements in existing designs. Of course, quite a number of New & Improved (tm) versions are mangled during the process instead of polished... but that is another issue.

IMO you've not shown much here to show why the third edition is better than the previous versions. The number of plays and ratings doesn't really show much as with older editions there was less people on bgg, or some instances of bgg not existing at all.

The actual rating is the most helpful metric you've provided. But even that when discussing different editions of the same game tend to get skewed a little bit.

Thanks for going to the effort of making the list I learnt about some new games.

Actually what I would be I terse to see is games that buck this trend and have released a third edition but it could not hold up against the first or second editions.
