Welcome back!

A while ago, I started a competition to determine what mechanics we like best in our games. Settings don't matter, what we're voting for here is the rules sets. True, seperating the two can be challenging, but we're big geeks and geekettes and can try our best to remain objective.

The systems were seeded alphabetically, which will continue for this round because I like odd methods of seeding. To vote, simply thumb the entry whose mechanics you prefer.

Voting will be open for a week or so, till about July 20.

Oh, the ease of the 2nd edition system to let you build what you want. More of a system by itself, the setting books are really what made the game. A great system that was simple to learn, simple to use, and only needed standard six-siders to play.

While I like some of the ideas behind Dogs in the Vineyard, the mechanics don't really work for me. Too gamey, whereas Diaspora is made of excellent working workiness. It does what you want an RPG to do, and nothing else.

While I love the Savage World system, Paranoia gets my vote for being a treasonous system. What do I mean?

Well, there is a system in place, but the players are not suppose to know about the system. If they do, they are guilty of treason and their characters may be terminated by anyone in game. Now, every player knows about the system if they play Paranoia, regardless of their security clearance. That's all fine and dandy. However, no one should prove they know the system, because it's treasonous to know and your character suffers.

Plus, this is the only game in history where you start with six characters, all pretty much the same, and you'll more than likely need them all and more. If you don't, you are either upper management with years of blame laying skills on your side, or your GM and fellow players aren't trying hard enough to kill you off.

As such, this has to have the simplest system in the world for players to remember.

1) The GM is always right
2) If the GMis wrong, your character will be terminated and their clone will have a chance to say the GM is right.

See, how simple is that? devil

Hehe...I prefer my post it notes balled up and thrown at the players. Keeps them jumpy. And in Paranoia, that's a good way to keep them. ^_^

It's about mechanics, right? Then it simply has to go to the 3rd edition. There's lots of stuff wrong with it (rule organisation, too expensive, too heroic in its presentation, some aspects not fully thought through), but the basic underlying mechanics are sublime, and very innovative.

2nd edition is really just a bugfix release for the 1st edition, and let's face it, WFRP has always been lauded for its setting; mechanics have never been WFRP's strong suit. Until the 3rd edition.
