2012-02-18 Gameday! It was awesome! My wife and I had a great time! Several new people, and lots of old and new friends were there to share a great day of gaming! I got almost all of my latest purchase of games to the table, just one more new one to go, then I need to work on expansions!

2012-02-19 My friend JC and his wife came over. The ladies looked at crafting ideas, and chatted, we played awesome games. Win! Twilight Struggle Evo

Had a lot of people over this weekend and finally was able to convince them to split into groups and play smaller games
.
One group played Airlines Europe, which I think is quickly becoming one of my wife's favorite games.
The group I was in played Catan: Cities & Knights, which is actually the first time I've played it. Someone brought the game over and I liked it enough to buy a copy on the spot. I'm still on the fence whether I will play with the added complexity on top of Catan, or just play one of my other games if I am looking for something deeper. We played 6p and the game tended to drag a little. I need to try it again with less players.

A busy schedule this weekend, but managed to relax each evening with a play or two... or three:
Friday
3x - Dominion My brother-in-law came over for a game so we introduced him to Dominion. We got in two games where my wife and I tied 36-36-30 the first game, and I won the second, 43-41-41. After that my wife and played a third as she is determined to defeat me at least once, we went to bed after I won 39-29.
Saturday
1x - Killer Bunnies (through Twighlight White and the Chocolate Booster Decks) I had hoped to play a couple games, but Saturday just proved to be too busy. Before bed we obliged the kids in a game of Killer Bunnies. This was the game that introduced us to the hobby and we'ver enjoyed it. But after tonights game I realized that I have to be in the right mood to play this anymore. There are so many other games that I enjoy playing so much more with the limited time I have. I ended up downgrading my ratings on these afterwards. I won, as no one else had any bunnies alive at the end, so I inherited any carrots out there.
Sunday
1x - Summoner Wars Master Set Another long day with hopes for any gaming slim. Much to my delight my wife offered to play Summoner Wars with me. This was my first complete game. My wife is not keen on this kind of theme and was struggling to stay interested as I tried to explain the game play. Once we got started and it started to sink in, she actually started to get in to it. She played the Shadow Elves and I played the Sand Goblins. I ultimately won. She hates to lose, so she'll be back.
Keep playing...

Saturday: I was ill all Saturday, in bed with a tummy bug, so sadly no games for me
Sunday: My son was asking to play Heroica: Fortaan yet again, so we suggested he might instead like to play a game of HeroQuest, as he's been enjoying playing a game each weekend. My daughter joined in too. We played the third scenario, the first one with traps, and my son wasn't too sure when we fell into a pit trap. There were many bad dice rolls going on, so all three heroes ended the adventure on 2 or less health, but there were no casualties (partly due to me as dungeon master attacking the player with most health at all times - had I been playing against adults I would have been a lot meaner!).
After that the children vanished upstairs to play together, so my husband and I got out Royal Palace, a game that I'm enjoying a lot 2 player right now. I won, by quite a mile as it turned out, as my husband's card strategy didn't seem to convert to points as well as my "lots and lots of tiles off the board" one.
Then in the evening we played another full game of Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization 2 player. I didn't help myself point-wise by keeping forgetting to update my score, but my husband won by enough of a margin that I think he was the genuine victor. Neither of us went particularly military this time, with me concentrating on a science/production strategy, and my husband doing very weird stuff with repeated revolts, which meant I could never upgrade my government, and hence was way behind on actions, and couldn't convert my ridiculous number of resources into wonders. I also had a major food shortage mid-game, thanks to not taking any farm upgrade, and this caused me huge problems - I won't be so careless next time! Still really loving this game!! More More More!!!!

Had a good weekend of games.
Friday Agricola - Good game with 4 players, was a close game with the score ranging from 30-39
Saturday Revolution! - Played 3 player game and the wife crushed us. Kingdom Builder - Another fun game for us, though my wife is on a bit of a winning streak, taking home the last 4 games.
Sunday The Hanging Gardens - Really enjoyable game that is great for 2 players Pandemic x2 - Had our fastest loss ever and our best win.

With Dai Senso! Vids working way up (unfinished).
Also played a game of Catan Card Game with soon to be ex (not game related issue). The latter felt draggy towards the end, as it always does, even though I pulled a come-from-behind victory.

On Saturday night, I enjoyed a solid game of 7 Wonders. After playing 3 games of this in a row with 7 players a few weeks ago, I thought I had played enough of this game for a while, but in my opinion, it's a much better game with just 4. Seriously, how can you keep track of what everyone's doing when you can hardly see their boards across the table?
I introduced this group to Betrayal at House on the Hill, and they all seemed to enjoy derping around the house and finding stuff, but the haunt was a severe disappointment - without spoiling anything, it was of the form "Get items A and B to player C, who must then go to room D, and the traitor wins if he kills player C". The trouble was, we already had items A and B, player C was two spaces away from room D, and the traitor was trapped in the basement with no stairs. Seriously anticlimactic, though everyone seemed to have fun regardless.
On Sunday night, I played a round of Agricola with my girlfriend. We're really starting to get the hang of things - both of us had completely filled boards, and I upgraded to a stone house, which was a first for me. I think we're ready to advance beyond the E deck.

Another slow weekend for gaming with my wife very busy with work. That didn't stop me from getting in two games with my 2.5 year old!
Animal Upon Animal is new and is fun. My daughter doesn't really have the coordination to play it well yet, but it is a fun very brief filler or diversion for adults too.
We also played the old favorite, Go Away Monster!.
Hopefully some heavier fare next weekend!

I finally got a chance to play Battlestar Galactica with my Toronto buddies who were up for the weekend. 5 players. I was Admiral Adama. One player said "I wanna play as the d****bag" and took Gaius Baltar. By the time he played his first turn, he had pretty much stated he was a cylon. He found himself in the brig for the rest of the game (no one knows why he never revealed).
Everything was going VERY well for the humans. BSG took 1 damage over the course of the entire game (and was repaired immediately), and no cylon centurians ever boarded. All resources were in the blue when the sleeper phase occured... and I woke up to find that I, Admiral Adama, was in fact a cylon!
With no help from my brigged counterpart, I framed President Roslin, who didn't seem to be helping the humans much. She ended up in the brig, and shortly thereafter, an election was called that made Starbuck president - who was elected and inaugurated while piloting a viper (LOL)!! It was looking great for the humans... until I intentionally ran us out of fuel on the second-to-last jump!

We also got in a game of Dixit: Odyssey (which seems to be best played with/after a 6-pack of beer per player), and a couple plays of Kill Doctor Lucky (KDL). The first play of KDL took about 20 minutes, as a couple of players were able to make consecutive murder attempts to drain "failure" cards from everyone else. The second game included "... And His Little Dog, Too!" Unfortunately, that game took over 3 hours (!), ending with the doctor dying via a "poke in the eye" with a murder value of 24. We have agreed never to play with the "Old Dog & New Tricks" variant (simultaneously) ... ever again.

Played a balloon busting scenario - French vs. Germans using Wings of War miniatures.
We had nine players with most of them handling two planes each so there was plenty of mayhem. One German player got three kills - his last was with six red results against his victim.
We French managed to fly through anti-aircraft fire and were able to successfully down both balloons for the win.
Fun game and always a blast to get that many friends together at once.

Warriors & Traders- Played a six player game of this one and boy was it tight. The more I play this one the more I like it, even though I have yet to win.Every game is a little different. We haven't played the other map yet, maybe next time.
Fire & Axe: A Viking Saga- A four player game of this one. I thought I was doing better then I wound up. I completed by far the most Sagas but in the end it wasn't near enough to overcome not capturing any cities.
Catan: Cities & Knights- Easily won a three player game of this one.
A Game of Thrones: The Board Game (Second Edition)-Played a five player game of this. I was Stark and managed a win thanks to building an alliance early. A neat game that I have only played twice but enjoyed both times I played.
Outpost- Played a four player game of this for the first time. Not one of my favorites. Although I was able to keep close to the leader the other two players felt out of it for much of the game. There is definately a problem with a run away leader in this game as the rich just get richer and there is really no way to stop or slow down their machine. That coupled with the mathiness of the game and lack of theme make this one I would not run back to play.

A few hours after playing Canvas Eagles, four of us got together to play Merchant of Venus (one player had never played before).
An early find of Auto Pilot followed by three other relics allowed me to quickly get a freighter with combo drive which allowed major profit per delivery.
We used the Ersatz Relics (which no one bought) and ensure that all relics except the laser as well as all Tele Gates are in the starting artifact pool.

On my weekly gameday, started with a nice little 4 player game of Eaten By Zombies!. Playing with 3 newbies, the cards weren't any good for a coop victory, everybody went their own way. After two deaths, we just had to kill about 5 more zombies for the win, but the 3d player went crazy and we lost. First time I see a zombie victory.
We followed by 2 games of Space Alert, with 5 players and only one newbie. It went well, we ended losing our first in the 10th step, not bad. The second mission was a breeze, we cleaned house and finished with 17 points. These lads never seemed to find a good time to accompany me for a visual confirmation
On Saturday, attending Game Summit 2012 in Ottawa as a game ambassador, I only had time to play a single game: Stone Age. It was my first play, and a 3 player game. I ended up finishing 3rd in a rather close game, 134-120-117. The winner snuck in a victory with a few cards with bonuses for tools at the end. Nice worker placememt, but I prefer Ninjato as a light WP.

Not a lot of board games this week, only an evening’s game of Loyang with some enjoyable cut-throat vegetable selling. Ah, I love Loyang. Eventhough the "I will trade this grain for your pumpkin and then trade your pumkin back to you for your cabbage and trade that cabbage back to you for your radish so you're out of food and will bugger off so I can get cards for cheap". Immersion, ho! Still, I like the game. And I like winning it, as well!

Eclipse - Finally got the chance to play the new hotness. I will admit the game scratches the TI3 itch but in half the time. That is a sure winner in my book. It was a 6 player game of new players and I came in with a 2nd place finish. It is a really great game, and is deserving of all the positive talk. It still is just a game, so I'll have to wait for a reprint.
Last Will - Played this at the Denver gaming convention. Was looking forward to the play, but the guy demoing didn't fully know how to play. So as we sat and listen to him plod through the rule book without having any idea how to play still it dampered the play experience. It has a fun idea where you destroy your fortune with frivolous spending. I will probably pass on the buying, but it was fun despite the fact we plodded through the game due to the crappy rule explanation.
Dungeon Petz - A new purchase for me, and it is a great game. It nails the combo of great theme with solid game play. My wife and I have played two games and she enjoys it. The game is pretty tricky, and once you walk away it stays with you. I highly recommend. Wasabi! - Played a quick two player game with my wife. It hasn't hit the table in quite awhile, so it was good to play again. Great little game, awesome production quality.

My son and I enjoyed several rounds of this over the weekend. It was a lot more fun than I'd expected but just as good as I'd hoped it would be. Good for coordination, quick thinking and planning, and laughter.

My daughter and I played The Magic Labyrinth. She got it for Christmas, but it has already fast become a favorite of hers. It's cute and fun, and as I love magnets and mazes, even I enjoy it.
My son and I also played Go Fish with his Pirates of the Caribbean cards. You should hear him cackle when he steals something from me.
And then we played Afrikan tähti (the Norwegian version) twice. It was really cute, and he in particular loved it.
Then, of course, I played some Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and Dungeons & Dragons (3.5 Edition) online. And I also played some Ticket to Ride, Tomb Raider: Underworld, and Fallout: New Vegas for my video games.

Friday: Juan came over and we played Warhammer 40,000 (fifth edition) for the 3rd time. I won again as the Orks. We did a really cool mission scenario that Juan wrote himself with lots of imagination. My assessment of the game though is still this, it's cool to see all the miniatures painted, but the decisions in the game almost none for most of the time.
Saturday: Brendan brought Twilight Struggle over. We hadn't played in nearly a year, so after a brush up on the rules, we started. Early on Brendan as the USSR jumped to an early lead, having 12 points at one time and the battle for Europe was hot and heavy. Then by mid-war with Central America in play, Panama became the surprise place of contention. By the end of the game, USA had 9 influence there and so did the USSR. In the late war, during round 8, I attempted to put an animal in space, which would've won me the game because I was at 19 points. It didn't happen. Then at the end of round 8, on USSR's last action, he had to score Europe, in which I was just 3 influence away from controlling E.Germany and thus controlling all of Europe. Finally, at the end of the game, despite outscoring me, USSR wasn't able to release the strangle hold I had on Europe. Even in France where he put up a good fight, but my realignments kept knocking him back, thus giving USA the win by controlling Europe. USSR would've won if it was based on points only. I've raised by rating of this game to a 9.
