Wizards of the Coast have announced that they are to reprint the three main Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1st Edition) rulebooks, with proceeds to go to the Gygax memorial fund.

The Players Handbook (US $34.95), Dungeon Masters Guide (US $44.95), and Monster Manual (US $34.95) are due for release on 17th April 2012. These limited edition books are described as 'premium versions', and are printed with the original art and content. However, the books will have new cover designs (not yet revealed).

The full trade announcement is available here (PDF).

Thanks to Echohawk and Shanya Almafeta for the scoop.

At the moment, it looks to me like Wizards to reprint AD&D 1st Ed. for Wizards... cool

Seriously, though, do you know what percentage of proceeds will go to the Gygax fund? I haven't been able to find that information, and these vague announcements always make me a bit skeptical.

That was my question too - I posted it in the other thread on this subject.

Saying "a portion" means little to me, but they are under no obligation to say how much. so *shrug*.

Still, good on them. Any gesture at this point is a good one.

Maybe portion as the portion that is above their costs?

Nah, then they would have said all profits, which has a much better ring to it.

It may just be poorly worded, but vague phrasing like this generally isn't something you like to see.

As an Accountant, I get all in a tizzy about charitable acts like this that use the word "proceeds" or say "a portion" or even "profits".

These organizations know (roughly) how much they make on a single book. Just come out and say a dollar figure. If you're planning on donating more if sales are extremely good, nobody is going to complain if you give more.

An interesting detail that no one has mentioned is that the books will only be sold through hobby retail outlets in North America. So no Amazon, nor any books to the UK or elsewhere.

Much like the D&D Fortune Cards... those were only supposed to be sold in retail stores (though you can find them online).

Sounds to me like WotC is admitting that they have completely run out of fresh ideas where D&D is concerned. I imagine the conversation went something like this:

"Let's do 5th ed. Sales always go up when we do a new edition."
"Good idea. What will 5th edition be like?"
"Uh, I dunno. I guess we'll ask the fans and stuff and figure something out in like a year."
"Won't that mean that people will stop buying 4th edition stuff in the meantime?"
"Uhhh yeeah. Okay, let's just do some reprints of the really old rulebooks."

This all started last year when they re-vamped the Red Box. WotC is a travesty and if you think they won't can D&D if it ever gets to a point that it isn't financially viable, you're kidding yourselves.

They probably couldn't wait to start working on 5th edition. 4e was such a hot mess, they should be embarrassed, but it's hard to be embarrassed when you have no concept of shame.

Wizards has released previews of the 3 covers - they're nothing special IMO, but they do succeed in paying homage to the original covers which is a plus.
