How to report bugs and improvements

When you are invited to participate in the beta you will receive an email with a link to this post and some additional passwords and links. To be as open as possible I post this information here, but we need to limit the number of beta testers to what we know we can manage, that is the reason for restricting access.

Welcome to the Beta Test of the new User Interface for BoardGameGeek!

Install and configure plugin

You need to use Firefox, Chrome or Internet explorer to report bugs and improvements, and you need to install and configure the BugDigger plugin in your browser. (It is also possible to create reports without the BugDigger plugin, see the end of this post.) Go to this page and download the appropriate plugin, then restart your browser:
http://bugdigger.com/browser-add-on/download/

If you test in a browser that the BugDigger plugin is not available for, please report with one that has it and edit the Environment field to reflect the operating system and browser you tested with.

You should now have a button that looks similar to this somewhere in your browser:

Click the arrow, and click BugDigger Servers.

If you have Google Chrome you instead go to the Extensions Manager page (open chrome://settings/extensions), click Options.

Remove the default BugDigger server, and add a new with Name:"BGG JIRA" and URL as listed in your email.

BugDigger has a configuration help page as well where parts of this information was taken from: http://bugdigger.com/jira/start/

Use the beta site

Browse the beta site (address and password in the email), log in with your normal account, browse anonymously or log in with the test account (in the email) and use it like you would use the current site. Report on things you find if it seems like it should work but does not, or something that really should be improved. Please look at the latest Friday post to see what areas still need major work and are know to not be complete.

When you are specifically looking to help with testing things, please read the last Friday blog post which will tell you what we focus on for this week. These are the reports that are of the most use, and will be worked on the soonest. Report on even quite small things, like minor position issues. This is the area we want to complete right now. Reports on other things than the focus area are great too, but there might be work done on them already but that are not in the release of the beta that you are testing.

Create a report

When you are on a page that you want to report something on, click the BugDigger icon (or drop-down menu and select Send to BGG JIRA, depending on your browser). A new window is opened and in a couple of seconds a screenshot of the page you visited (showing only the page) will be automatically attached.

A history file listing the URLs and the response codes you got when visiting them is also attached, including the recent (seems to be the current day) URLs and only from the beta site. The history is useful for us to track down what went wrong, if you do not want to share that (or the screenshot or the environment) please click the checkbox next to it to stop it from being uploaded.

Read the descriptions under the fields, the more of them that you fill in the easier and faster it will be for us to sort and prioritize the reports. Do not fill in too much, try to only include information relevant to solving the issue. Additional images are great if you are explaining complicated things.

If you want to report on something general you can remove the information in the Environment field and remove the attachments (just remove the checks next to each file).

Click "Create", and you are done.

After posting you will get short thank you message. You can then close the window.

Edit uploaded screenshots with BugDigger
It is possible to edit the automatically captured screenshots. Click the image to edit, add arrows, text and field marks, click save, and you will see a new additional screenshot attached. You can deselect the original screenshot to not upload that one.

Reporting without BugDigger
It is also possible to create reports without the BugDigger plugin. This is useful if you use a browser that the plugin is not available for. Go to the URL listed in the invitation email as the address you should fill in for the BugDigger servers. Do not log in. Click the small menu item "+Create Issue" up right on the screen, then click "Create" and fill in the forms the same way as described above. Please fill in the environment field (your OS and browser) and upload screenshots and images yourself, as that is not done automatically here.

Thanks!
We will not answer most reports directly to you as it would take too much time, but list the most important things that have been updated or are problematic in the blog posts here.

Thank you for helping us make BoardGameGeek even better!

[Edit 2012-01-23: The BugDigger developers have implemented our feature requests, reporting is now faster, easier and we could add our own thank you note after the issue was created. The unnecessary instructions have been removed, above is how it works now. Thank you!]
[Edit 2012-01-25: Added note on history file and screenshot]
[Edit 2012-02-06: Added note that uploading additional files does not work]

Thanks for the question, this needed to be made more clear! I added information about the history file and screenshot to the top post. Some more details for completeness:

There are 3 things that are automatically added with a report. I did some random clicking and created a report now and include most things below as examples (removed the url of the beta site and replaced with BETAURL).

1. Environment
Description of your operating system, browser and a very handy direct link to the page you were on when clicking report. Example:

Web Page: http://beta.geekdo.com/image/1184296/mrthud
User Browser: Chrome 16
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/535.7 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/16.0.912.75 Safari/535.7

2. History file
Your recently visited URLs on the beta page. Other history is not included. Example:

Previous actions on site
Requests to BETAURL on Wed, Jan 25, 2012 (CST)
04:11:51 /image/1184296/mrthud

And like I wrote in the top post, please remove the history, screenshot and environment if you do not want to share them. If sharing them is ok for you, they help us a lot in fixing what you report on quickly. This information is not going to be posted publicly in any way, but is accessible to the admins and developers actively working on the site that have an account in the Jira installation (currently 10 persons).

Do you also want general feedback or just bug reports at the moment?

Two suggestions:
- in the trades section it would be great if a sub-section (for example "my trade") opens immediately. At the moment (also in the old layout) the trades section just adds another menu
(TL;DR trade section -> preselect a sub-section)

- When customizing a layout the customize option should close once you click save.

Overall I like the new layout - especially with the customizing options.

I guess the most important issue should be to get an easier, cleaner interface for new users while keeping the full functionality for the regulars - you're definitely getting there!

Oh and btw: can we hope for a mobile version?

Thank you for testing!

Please read the latest Friday update on this blog, at the moment of writing this it is Jan 27. There you can see that Trades is currently not code complete (listed under "Not working"), so there will be work done on it before it should be considered working.

Customization is a general and important component, and a suggestion like this is something I would like you to report using BugDigger. Just this issue is already known and scheduled, but it is much better to get duplicate reports, than no reports. The number of reports also helps in understanding how serious an issue is and thereby how important it is to fix it.

Thanks! We are working hard but need all the help we can get!

A mobile version would be great but will most probably not be something that is available at release.

In conclusion: please report through BugDigger and primarily the weekly focus, do not post issues here, and requests for new features is currently best handled at The BGG suggestions meta-list.

After getting an invite (yay!) I clicked around on the beta site for a while on an ancient machine with an outdated version of Firefox (so it was a little slow meeple) I began to wonder if there is a document outlining some sort of vision what the new layout is supposed to accomplish.

One thing which sort-of began to work on my nerves was the loss of the rather arcane and fearsome-looking tabular view for my collection, being replaced by a 'game block' view which really hinders quick scanning and scrolling. Instead of concentrating one's view on some column, this is now no longer possible because there is but one column which contains alternating material. This change seems to have been carried over to many other tabular material, for example forum views. It may look cool, but I don't think it particularly likable nor usable. Hence my question about the 'rationale' of the new layout and whether it has been written down somewhere.

I'm also looking where I can enter play statistics. That functionality doesn't seem to be active yet as of 30 January, is that correct?

Thank you for testing!

A redesign vision post is among the list of things to do. I hope to get it done soon, but I cannot guarantee a date. Questions that need an answer (like this) are best asked as comment to blog post or as email or geekmail to me.

As instructed in your invitation email, please read the latest update, at this moment Jan 27. There Plays are listed as not working, and although Collection is listed as working (as it works ) more work is scheduled on that and testing should mostly wait until we have a test week for it. Even so, all reports are welcome, but please report it via BugDigger so that we can handle it efficiently.

Okay, I'll dutifully await that post, and continue testing once I'm home (currently I'm at a holiday address and using, as I said, a bit of an outdated browser meeple.)

What browser is this for? Was it restart once to activate the plugin, then restart once more after setting the server? Another report has been that after setting the server, clicking the icon redirects to a mybugger site. Clicking the arrow, selecting Send to JIRA BGG, makes later clicks on the icon go directly to the BGG JIRA.

Miserable to help. It would take far too long to submit all of the suggestions I might make (all of which would amount to - leave a dense, text-heavy interface like the current one available as an option), so rather than continue to deal with the headache the new interface is giving me, I'll enjoy the current interface for as long as it lasts.

Number of things I can see on the current front page (not including links to recently viewed games): 37 threads, geekgold auctions, and geeklists, plus 10 Quickbar links. Even with the useless subdomain links taking up a fair chunk of space...

Number of things I can see on the new front page (once I managed to find a way to get the useless pictures and videos out of the way): 5 threads.

That is an option You can customize many pages, including the front page, to show a lot of information on one single page. You can show more threads in most blocks (add 5 more). Note that everything on the current page does not exist yet on the new page, so some things can not be added to the customizations yet.

The demo video for BugDigger showed the ability to edit the image but I could not figure out how to do that. Do we have access to our bug reports after we have filed them? I don't seem to be able to log into the JIRA site. I assume that's intentional.

edit - encountered a bug trying to submit this. If I could update the bug report I would add that the my comment did add, but I had to refresh the page to get the disabled comment box to disappear. On a side note, Chrome's spell check sucks, but its better than IE's. laugh

edit part duex - comment dialog still wouldn't close on submit and I noticed my # of edits wasn't showing the number 1. Let's see if it changes to "2".

Yes, BugDigger can allow you to edit screenshots before sending them, but not when used with JIRA like we do :/ The BugDigger crew hope to fix that, but we have no guarantees.

No, you do not have access to the reports after sending them.

There is currently a bug with uploading additional screenshots, it worked before and we are working to fix it. Automatic screenshots works. It is very strange.

Send me an email with screenshots and I'll help troubleshoot. rustan@bgg, as in the beta emails you have received.

Please, do report issues with using Opera! The BugDigger plugin is only available for some browsers, so the reporting needs to be done through them. Same as if you are testing on a mobile device.

One thing that isn't a bug (I think) and that I can't report on – has "Recent Additions" (AKA GeekFeed) been removed completely? I can't find it at all on the new page.

You can change the environment field, write safari there. If it is something safari-specific it also helps to write safari in the name (Summary field) of the report.

It exists (/geekfeed) but needs work, and a link to it.

Thanks for the invite. I must admit, my initial response is highly negative.

The front page is both too busy, and has too little on it.

Too busy - those huge blocks of hot images, hot videos, and hotness. Okay, I hear the front pages is customizable - but I cannot figure out how to get these things OFF my front page.

And too little. Instead of seeing on the front page lists of geeklists, forum posts, or whatever else you have on your front page, you see links which convey VERY little.

Geeklists - you can't see on the front page how many thumbs a list has received, or who posted the list. I think that is important information. This change will reduce the "accidental" traffic to geeklists, and could have a detrimental effect on geeklists as a whole. I like geeklists, I write them and I read them. Their presentation on the front pages is grossly inadequate.

And within geeklists, it is very difficult now to tell the items from the comments. The lay-out reminds me of the "new" Slate.com, which was also a big step backwards. And again, why are the users names/icons being de-emphasized? What IS without BGG the users? A dry database. Don't de-emphasize the user.

The same is true for front pages posts of forums, reviews, etc. I strongly urge that the BGG user who posted the content still be identified on the front page. I know we all have posters who, if we see their name on page 1, we will click and read it. (I don't want to have to subscribe to dozens of posters.) With this lay-out, such happy accidental findings of a review, or whatever, by user X will decrease, and that is a bad thing.

I'm just getting started. I'll stop there for now. I appreciate the hard work (I could never design a website to save my life), but I question the direction this is headed.

I wanted to leave it a few days before posting, but I found myself nodding so vehemently while reading Wendel's comments that I can't wait.

"...too busy, and has too little on it". Bingo. Even after extensive customisation and fiddling with display settings, my "beta" front page has about half the information density of the old front page. I am not able to see the details that really matter to me.

This image illustrates the problem (I hope). This shows the same snippet of information, "old style" vs "new". I have not rescaled - the new version takes up twice as much screen real estate for very little added functionality (if any). Miraculously, the new site design manages to do this with a smaller font!

I understand the importance of white space in page design, but the consequence for many users is to create a towering front page that cascades for a couple of dozen screens. The alternatives are multiple welcome pages (one for each forum?) or short limits on the number of items displayed at any one time in each bucket ("click here to display the next ten", "click here to display the next ten"...). None of these is acceptable to experienced users - we want to be able to skim over subject headers, author names and game titles.

I agree very strongly about de-emphasis of user names and avatars. This is perhaps the most disappointing and annoying aspect of the new design. Quite frankly, I think it will be immediately and directly harmful. Please do not implement this - leave avatars prominent.

Wendel's other points above are also very true - across the board I think he is quite correct. But please don't dismiss my complaint about font size either - the new font is simply too small.

Finally - again echoing Wendell - thank you for all the work which is going into the redesign. It truly is appreciated.

While testing, keep in mind what systems are listed as not working. These will need work, and there are also some important things that are not listed at all but will help a lot with various aspects of using the site when they are implemented.

The systems listed as working, and even the ones we release to test, are not finished. We want input from the beta testers so that the site can be made as good as possible.

There is no way we can efficiently create issues in the project management systems if everyone posts reports in the forums. So please create a report for each separate thing that you would like to see changed or improved, that makes it much easier to handle, sort and prioritize.

There is no way the site can be perfect for everyone, so if we change at all some will be disappointed. If we do not change, some will be disappointed too. We have a goal of making the site easier to use for new people, but we want it to be as good or better compared to the existing site for current users too. But until the redesign is launched there will be work done to improve it, so do not see the site as finished at this moment.

Uploading additional attachments is now solved, I'll post that in the news tomorrow.

Thanks all for testing! With your help we can make the new site a huge lot better than it would be otherwise.
