Two vaguely water-like ideas have led to today's punn-ishing title.

First up, it's the F-ing up the Geek Competition. My first table, playing the Transatlantic playset, are currently in the lead and in line to win a substantial amount of for our troubles. This is both good and bad.

The Good:
cool Marshall, who suggested the competition, is on my table and will thus share in the prizes
cool Barad, who is new to Fiasco, is also on my table and will also share in the prizes
cool Luke, who is a new user on RPGG, is also on my table and will thus share in the prizes.
cool I'm running low on at the moment and have some things in mind that need more.
cool We are F-in funny.

The Bad:
angry We only have 4 votes. That's enough to win right now.
angry I'm on the table and feel a little funny about winning something I'm running.

So make me feel better about it, Kids - go vote. You'll find a few summaries available to read in the link above if you haven't been following the games and you too could win some just by posting a comment.

Secondly
, my Legend of the Five Rings (3rd Edition) campaign is feeling a little dead in the water and I'm worried that it's sunk (I did say vaguely water-like ideas...). Let me fill you in;

"The Many Paths of Heaven" is a campaign in which an elderly Imperial Cartographer is making a final trek around the Empire, escorted by a group of 'high potential, low realisation' Samurai from the various clans of Rokugan. In their journeys, they have discovered several parts of an ancient treasure, "The Twenty-One Truths of Osano-Wo".

Each session of the game thus far has been written as 'How would Author X tackle Rokugan?', where given values of Author X include H.P. Lovecraft and Neil Gaiman, among others. There has been some quite strong characterisation from the players (all ten of them) and I've had a ball with the game.

But then we had Kalinda, our second child.

Energy drained. Brain depleted. Unable to write cohesive sessions. Actually, I think that's mostly what I've been telling myself instead of getting down to business, but the point remains that it's been easier to play board games than organise the house to accomodate a day's roleplaying.

Now, I'm faced with a dilemma. It's been 9 months since I ran a session. Enthusiasm will have waned quite naturally in that time and I must decide - Resuscitate or Restart?

On the side of restarting, there's now Legend of the Five Rings (4th Edition), which is cool. There's also the fact that no-one would need to try and remember stuff. On the other hand, I have copious notes, session reports here and it isn't all that tough to link people back in and finish what we started, perhaps even with a couple of tidy retcons here and there to help people re-establish themselves.

Also on the side of continuing the old campaign; each character had a 3-song soundtrack already figured out and I wouldn't need to trawl thousands of music files looking for the right song...

I think I've just talked myself into continuing the old campaign; I really enjoy running for large groups, it combines my mad freeform writin' skillz and my teacher crowd-management talents in ways that tabletopping doesn't. A new edition is nice, but to be honest, roleplaying with me is about tossing a couple of dice and saying 'that sounds good' - I've never been one for copious rules (look for that as the subject of an upcoming blog post...).

Feel free to praise or sway my decision below, I love to hear other people's thoughts on my dramas...

Man, that is a good looking elbow in the bottom left of that first photo. Just, wow. I mean, as far as elbows go, it's just all anyone could ask for.

Depending on how curious you were about 4th ed, it probably wouldn't be too hard to bridge over. Keep the same overarching Truths of Osano-Wo scheme, people who want to keep their characters update them as 4th, people who want to roll up fresh characters can. And all that don't make the transfer, I dunno, starved to death after not being described eating for the better part of a year.

OR you could always have a big bridging session, wherein the opportunities for endings and brave doings and descriptions of eating various foodstuffs abound.

Dude, I feel the same way. On the one hand, its a lot of GG and it would be weird to get back more GG than I donated to the contest in the first place - especially because I put up money to encourage others. On the other hand, I think our Fiasco is pretty fun, well developed, and I'm proud of how well the game is turning out. If we end up taking the pot, I'd be happy to tip some of my winnings away to other tables that also got off the ground or chip in for a second award for games that finish or are still going after another couple weeks.

A can do diceless, but I don't know if I could do a tableless rpg. And that's a lot of players...draw the line at six or up to eight for guest players...so I don't know what I'm talking about. I will say a couple of times I have picked up campaigns after a significant break-- in each case I was pleasantly surprised at everyone's memory and enthusiasm for the return. I'd probably draw the line at much more than a year, but nine months isn't that bad. Give the players the big finish or significant transition- I really hate when I do invest in a character don't get some kind of at least modest state change, even if we go on to another campaign. So I guess I'm saying that in your position I would hesitate, doubt, argue with mysel, be convinced by my better half to run and then have a good result.

Perhaps you mean the third one? There's no elbow in the first. I'm glad you're so impressed with it though...

I'm pretty sure I'll pick up, possibly with something big and dramatic. Maybe I'll set it in the futre and someone will have an eyepatch...

I'm thinking the 'many players' thing may be a blog topic for the future. It's really not that hard to manage if you use some tricks.

And Lowell, it's not table-less, we do use the rules and a tabletop - in fact, one of the key 'artsy' parts of the game is that players only come to the table when they want to roll somthing - otherwise, they're on the lounges playing in-character. This game is, in many ways, me playing with form and seeing how it works. Whatever comes after 'Many Paths' will be a polished product indeed...

First group photo. Jeez, you're such a stickler.

So the plan is to plow on ahead with 3rd?

Also, which session was the Gaiman-y one? I remember dear Howard, the Agatha Christie one, the political mini-game thingummy... and... Oh right, candles of doom.

Actually, I haven't run the Gaiman one yet. I was thinking of the Christie one. The Candles wasn't directly inspired by anyone, though on reflection it had a few Stephen Kingish elements...

ok, you've successfully guilted me into going to read the fiasco threads and voting. sigh.there goes some hours I won't get back

as for the L5R campaign - I really love the sessions we've had so far. I don't think I'd like to restart. I don't however have a problem with porting characters over to 4th ed if that won't involve major changes to character stories. I don't care if skills aren't exactly the same, as long as we can keep the same general flavour.

p.s. why oh why do you always seem to take photos of me when I'm EATING? I look terrible

For a given definition of terrible, I suppose...

I just wanted a candid shot and you were hungry at the time!

No guilt was involved, really, it was just a humble request...

As for the rest of you, guilt! In spades! Go vote!!

I think pick the campaign up from where it was. It's not like your players won't understand that you've been busy.

As discussed, given the way you run, it doesn't matter that much. Some of the players care about the mechanics more than you do, so whatever.

It's a good thing it's shrouded by sleeve, for public decency's sake. There'd just be too much swooning, otherwise.
