Monte Cook has announced on his journal that he has left Wizards and is no longer working on Dungeons & Dragons. He cited a difference of opinion with the company as his reason for departing but said he remains in agreement with the design team and hopes to consult in the future.

Wondering what you'll do with nothing new to buy? Well now's your chance. Steve Long, former Line Developer at Hero Games is working on Mythic Hero, a sourcebook for mythologies in the world of gaming.
If this Kickstarter project succeeds, Steve has promised to deliver not only old standards like the Chinese and Roman pantheons but also quite a few more:
American Indian (split into six sub-chapters covering major cultural groups) Armenian Assyro-Babylonian Aztec and Mayan Canaanite* Celtic Chinese Demonology (medieval Christian demons like Belial, Moloch, and so on; may also include some angels) Egyptian Etruscan* Filipino* Finnish Greek and Roman Hawaiian and Polynesian/Oceanic (possibly split into two chapters) Hindu Hittite* Hungarian* Inca Japanese Maori* Masai* Mongolian/Turkic* Norse Slavic/Russian South American* (possibly combined with Inca) Sumerian Voodoo Yoruban Miscellaneous
(Entries with a * after them are subject to being demoted into the “Miscellaneous” chapter based on how my research goes.)
Steve has a reputation for thorough research, so this book will probably be useful for non-hero gamers as well.

An English translation of Yuuyake Koyake: Golden Sky Stories is on its way. Golden Sky Stories is a 2006 RPG from from Ryo Kamiya, designer of Maid: The Role-Playing Game, and is considered his finest work. It's a henge (magical animal spirit) game where players will take the roles of kitsune and the like, but with the ability to temporarily take on human form.
The English version will be sold as a Kickstarter project, with a Maid reprint a likely supporter bonus. The translation is being handled by Ewen Cluney who translated Maid.
Bully Pulpit Games are having a Free Game February celebration. Head over there and grab some free games! The first game on offer is Dungeon Squad 2, a dungeoncrawler for kids. While you're at it, check out some of the older free games including Dulse, Last Train Out of Warsaw, and a historical Lady Blackbird hack, The Bloody Forks of the Ohio.
The stories of Playground Magazine's death were apparently exaggerated. The indie RPG / LARP magazine is making a comeback thanks to new publisher Rollespils Akademiet.
You can read the full press release on Playground's website.

A Kickstarter project has begun with the plan of reprinting the popular Order of the Stick series. Click the first link in this post to check it out, but if successful (and it likely will be), this project could potentially open the floodgates to limited reprints of other small press RPGs...

There's been some talk about the big year that Green Ronin has planned. At last, today Chris Pramas has filled us in on what exactly (most) of those plans are! Dragon Age, Mutants & Masterminds, and A Song of Ice and Fire all look to have some exciting new products being released over the coming year.
Chris Pramas wrote: It's January once again and that means it's time for me to talk about our plans for the new year. The good news is that we're in a better position than we were a year ago. Sales on our core lines are strong, product flow has been improved, and we hired three new people in the fourth quarter of 2011. We are kicking off 2012 with a bigger staff that we've ever had before and a plethora of projects to keep us busy and you gaming all year long. So let me get right to it!
If you're interested in reading the article in full, you can find it on their website, here!

So over the weekend there was talk of an announcement coming from Wizards of the Coast (MANY thanks to
The Harnish
Germany Duisburg NRW
Cult of The Harnish Leader
for bringing this to my attention so I could keep my eyes open). It was said that this would be announced through the NY Times. After much speculation, it appears that many were correct: Wizards has announced it is working on a new edition of D&D.
It also seems that they're going to those they are marketing to for suggestions:
Ethan Gilsdorf, NY Times wrote: But there might yet be hope for Dungeons & Dragons, known as D&D. On Monday, Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro subsidiary that owns the game, is expected to announce that a new edition is under development, the first overhaul of the rules since the contentious fourth edition was released in 2008. And Dungeons & Dragons’ designers are also planning to undertake an exceedingly rare effort for the gaming industry over the next few months: asking hundreds of thousands of fans to tell them how exactly they should reboot the franchise.
And if you aren't sure how spot on the NY Times is on the subject, here's a snipped straight from the wizard's mouth:
Mike Mearls wrote: That is why we are excited to share with you that starting in Spring 2012, we will be taking this process one step further and conducting ongoing open playtests with the gaming community to gather feedback on the new iteration of the game as we develop it. With your feedback and involvement, we can make D&D better than ever. We seek to build a foundation for the long-term health and growth of D&D, one rooted in the vital traits that make D&D unique and special. We want a game that rises above differences of play styles, campaign settings, and editions, one that takes the fundamental essence of D&D and brings it to the forefront of the game. In short, we want a game that is as simple or complex as you please, its action focused on combat, intrigue, and exploration as you desire. We want a game that is unmistakably D&D, but one that can easily become your D&D, the game that you want to run and play.
After so much outcry about 4E stripping the game from its roots (whether accurate or inaccurate), it seems that Wizards is finally going to the source in an attempt to gear the next iteration of this classic series towards those most likely to purchase it: us.
If you'd like to read the whole NY Times article, here it is!
And here is Mike Mearls official announcement from wizards.com. You can read the announcement directly from him as well as sign up for info on playtesting the new edition.

A holiday period RPG news round-up:
State of the Hat: 2012 and Beyond
Fred Hicks has shared his outline of the future for Evil Hat in the blog post State of the Hat: 2012 and Beyond. There are some real gems to be found, including news of Don't Hack This Game, a supplement for Don't Rest Your Head which collects many ideas for customising the game (Ryan Macklin has also blogged about this, soliciting content). There is also information about some exciting Dresden Files RPG projects, such as the Paranet Papers, described as 'part system update and setting catch-up, part campaign starter kit'.
Gnome Stew teaser
The Gnome Stew team have hinted at some imminent news in a Google+ post:
Quote: Sometime in January 2012, hopefully just after the new year, we're launching a new project.
It's not a book. It will have a website. Gnome Stew will be its anchor. It will be a challenge to GMs all over the world. Expect further details when we get them!
Beginner Box Pathfinder Society Character Creation Guide
Following on from previous announcements, Paizo have expanded the play options available to Pathfinder Beginner Box owners even further.
